1.	A well cared for lawns can significantly increase the property value of a home.
2.	A healthy lawn is very important to our environment. A 50-foot by 50-foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four.
3.	Lawns cool the atmosphere. Four average lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning, which is enough for 16 average homes.
4.	Do not overwater. Watering your lawn should almost never be done daily. Overwatering causes shallow roots, nutrient loss, disease-susceptibility and severe problems with weeds. Ideally, a lawn should receive one to two inches of water per week with the soil saturated to a depth of four to six inches.
5.	The 1/3 Rule – Every time your lawn is mowed no more than 1/3 of the grass plant should be cut. If not mowed often enough the grass plant is stunned and the root system stops growing.

With the not so hard winter months, insects will be out in full force this year! I’ve already seen mosquitoes out in mid March! In this month’s Ask Adam article, I’d like to talk on using insecticides as a preventative, which will keep you much happier and bite free.

Consider spraying your trees and shrubs several times this year, preferably 3 times. If you apply insecticide similar to a liquid Seven, you will not only help prevent insects such as Japanese beetles and others from taking over your roses and ornamental trees but have a better chance of saving the plants foliage from being stripped away as well.

Also, consider applying an invisible barrier such as a liquid Seven around your house foundation and window wells. This will help prevent those creepy crawlers from entering in and finding their way into your home. Remember, all pesticides have a residual lifespan so applying this regularly will deter pests away and keep your home bug free.

Lastly, don’t forget about your lawn. By having it sprayed a few times a year, this will cut down on mosquitoes, ticks, and grubs and will keep your children and furry friends happier and bite free!

Want to try a chemical free ant preventer? Take a kids crayola concrete play chalk and draw a line around your windows and doors outside your home. Ants will not cross a chalk line.

Wintertime, like an x-ray of the landscape, reveals a garden’s basic structure and composition. If you want to add more interest in your garden, consider some of these ideas and plants.
By using focal points, such as trellises, pergolas, statuary, containers and even large boulder rocks, you can help create dramatic year round interest. Certain features like ponds or bubbling boulders can bring attention to your garden, and sometimes can even be left running in the winter.
Gravel and wood mulches come in a variety of colors also. Have you ever considered dyed red wood mulch? There are almost a dozen different colored gravel mulches available to brighten up your landscape as well. Have you ever considered mulching your garden beds with recycled glass chips? That’s right! Recycled glass chips! Glass chips come in dozens of different colors and are safe to use and touch. Most come from recycled wine bottles. The glass is broken into small pieces and then tumbled, so there are no sharp edges. It is sold in bags and for large quantities, totes.
Did you know that adding plants such as witch hazel (hamamelis sp.), can bring fragrance to the garden, even in the cold weather? Another favorite shrub of mine is the red twig dogwood (cornus alba ‘Sibirica’). This shrub does lose its leaves in the winter but provides a brilliant red stem throughout the year. Also, by adding evergreens, like holly or boxwood, will help break up the monotony of the “dead look” as what some landscapes may look like in the winter months!
