Wintertime, like an x-ray of the landscape, reveals a garden’s basic structure and composition. If you want to add more interest in your garden, consider some of these ideas and plants.

By using focal points, such as trellises, pergolas, statuary, containers and even large boulder rocks, you can help create dramatic year round interest. Certain features like ponds or bubbling boulders can bring attention to your garden, and sometimes can even be left running in the winter.

Gravel and wood mulches come in a variety of colors also. Have you ever considered dyed red wood mulch? There are almost a dozen different colored gravel mulches available to brighten up your landscape as well. Have you ever considered mulching your garden beds with recycled glass chips? That’s right! Recycled glass chips! Glass chips come in dozens of different colors and are safe to use and touch. Most come from recycled wine bottles. The glass is broken into small pieces and then tumbled, so there are no sharp edges. It is sold in bags and for large quantities, totes.

Did you know that adding plants such as witch hazel (hamamelis sp.), can bring fragrance to the garden, even in the cold weather? Another favorite shrub of mine is the red twig dogwood (cornus alba ‘Sibirica’). This shrub does lose its leaves in the winter but provides a brilliant red stem throughout the year. Also, by adding evergreens, like holly or boxwood, will help break up the monotony of the “dead look” as what some landscapes may look like in the winter months!
