![Ask Adam! Bugs the Word!]()
With the not so hard winter months, insects will be out in full force this year! I’ve already seen mosquitoes out in mid March! In this month’s Ask Adam article, I’d like to talk on using insecticides as a preventative, which will keep you much happier and bite free.
Consider spraying your trees and shrubs several times this year, preferably 3 times. If you apply insecticide similar to a liquid Seven, you will not only help prevent insects such as Japanese ...

![Ask Adam! Colorful Winter Gardens!]()
Wintertime, like an x-ray of the landscape, reveals a garden’s basic structure and composition. If you want to add more interest in your garden, consider some of these ideas and plants.
By using focal points, such as trellises, pergolas, statuary, containers and even large boulder rocks, you can help create dramatic year round interest. Certain features like ponds or bubbling boulders can bring attention to your garden, and sometimes can even be left running in the winter....

![Ask Adam! Water those Evergreens well into the Winter!]()
The evergreens you planted this spring might appear healthy, but don’t let the green foliage fool you!
Several months of below average rainfall this hot Summer has evergreens and other non-deciduous trees and shrubs vulnerable to dehydrating cold winter winds. Watering recently planted trees and shrubs on warm, above freezing temperature days this late Fall or even Winter could make the difference between them surviving or dying this.
With newly planted trees and shrubs, the root...

![Ask Adam! It's that time, TULIP TIME!]()
Want to have your neighbors stop in their tracks with a “wow” expression on their face? Plant a few hundred tulip bulbs in your landscape! Tulips are spring-blooming perennials that grow from bulbs. Depending on the species, tulip plants can grow as short as 4 inches or as high as 28 inches. They flower in a wide variety of colors, except pure blue.
I love tulips. Why you might ask? Well, they are just plain gorgeous, especially when planted closely together in large groups....

![Ask Adam! Fall Lawn Renovation]()
Did you know that according to the national weather service office in St. Louis, we had the 4th hottest summer in history? No wonder we all had so many weeds this year! Our “good grass” was stressed and thinned out and the bad grass aka “the weeds” came in!
An old friend of mine that passed about two decades ago told me that the best time to plant grass seed was Labor Day weekend. My recommendation to improve your lawn to a thick, green, and healthy state is as...

![Watering New Turfgrass Sod When.....How....How Much]()
The first watering of newly installed turfgrass sod is the most important. Begin watering immediately after installation of new turfgrass. The first watering establishes how well the grass will perform for years to come.
It is essential to begin watering new turf within a half hour after it is laid on the soil. Apply at least 1 inch of water so that the soil beneath the turf is very wet. Ideally, the soil 3 to 4 inches below the surface will be moist.
For the next two weeks (or until...

![Ask Adam! Just say no to Grubs!]()
June or early July is the time of year to apply grub control to your lawn. Grub worms look like tiny, white shrimp that lay under your turf approximately 1-4” below the ground. They feed on the root system of your lawns turf as their food. A good identifier that you might have grubs is dead looking brown patches in your lawn. You might even have a mole problem. If you can peel back the turf, almost like carpet, you will probably be able to see these critters and identify them as white...
